I’ve just read that the Portuguese bought 756 (+17%) full electric vehicles during 2016 (mostly Nissan Leafs). That might seem a small number — as it is just 0,36% of the market — but it is a good clear sign of the future. Electric is both cheap and clean and with the arrival of the 300+Km cars in 2017 I imagine that many will start looking at them with greater curiosity. I’m really curious to see how the introduction of the 41Kwh Renault Zoe, the Opel Ampera-e and the Hyundai Ioniq will impact these numbers during this year.

The Second Machine Age: Work, Progress, and Prosperity in a Time of Brilliant Technologies

This is a book the reflect upon. Well, not the book, but the ideas in it. The topics covered claim that we are living alongside a transformative force that will change the shape of the world as we know it.

The author argues that the Second Machine Age is upon us in the form of the crescent digitisation of everything. This is reshaping most of the fundamental aspects of our economies where the cost structures of the digital goals are becoming negligible.

There are many ideas in the book (alongside with some advice) that are food for thought, and this is probably the books best-selling point. The only negative aspect I found is that it focuses mostly on America in the latter chapters of the book.

A curiosity spoiler is that the book addresses some issues in the bounty-spread dichotomy that have been fundamental in recent elections (Brexit and Trump), so they acquire some prophetic aspect when reading the book in 2017.

I also enjoyed the chapters on education, although I found myself wanting more chapters on the topic. Naturally, education is not a “sexy” theme for everybody, but I believe it will become the fundamental tool to reshape the human side of the XXI century man-machine equation.

Highly recommended.

A Grande Guerra pela Civilização by Robert Fisk

This book could have been very interesting if it was reduced to one third of its size. At more than 1000 pages it becomes very boring to read through. My advice? don’t bother with this one, or just skim through the most important chapters.

As an information source it shows how the west has f**ked up the situation in the middle east, and in part the mess of the world we live in is also our own fault. But all it tells us could be written in a non-mammoth way. It took me almost one year to make this go into the club37 shelve. My rating is just 2★ because of the size. Otherwise it could have been a 3 or 4 star book.

Can Future Faraday FF91 win the EV market?http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/triploexpresso/~3/ku4W2ReyU3Q/can-future-faraday-ff91-win-ev-market.htmlbatterieselectric carsenergyFuture Faraday FF91IoniqLeafTeslageral@triploexpresso.com (TriploExpresso.com)Thu, 05 Jan 2017 14:06:06 PSThttp://www.sixhat.net/?p=4942Can the Future Faraday FF91 be it? One of my recent interests is Electric Cars. It is my belief that the combustion engine is going the way of the dodo. Personally I need to replace my almost 20 year old Rover in the next couple of years.

The recent announcement of the Faraday Future FF91 is a testament to the momentum the industry is having (even if the car will only sell in 2018, and only in the US and China). But the FF91 also shows another aspect of this industry. The need for very aerodynamic shapes is making really, really, really ugly cars (Leaf?, Ioniq?).

The electric car cannot be a reason-engineering product alone. Not in XXI century when car companies will charge a lot for these products. Electric cars also need to capture passions. They need to be the Millennium Falcon of the automobile industry. Something that gets car nerds excited and doesn’t capture the interest of eco-zealots.

Right now companies are approaching this lack of oomph via the performance route. The Future Faraday FF91 goes 0–60mph in 2.39 seconds. Tesla is doing the same thing (although their cars are nicer because they first solved the pizazz issue by borrowing a lotus chassis for the Roadster). Future Faraday FF91 design is… well, it looks like a Rhino (another endangered species). But this doesn’t make them desirable to petrol heads (yet). And the fault lies on the long history of the combustion engine. The noise, the smells, the macho attributes petrol cars convey that many EVs still lack.

The near future of Electric Vehicles

I see the future of traditional car makers and new EV-only car companies converging. The latter will end up absorbed by the former. But by that time we’ll be all better served by electric cars than we were by combustion engine cars. And we’ll be happier and healthier too.

If now is not the time to buy an electric car, some might say, then now is not the time to buy a petrol car either. The two things are decoupled and buying a combustion engine car is one of the dumbest decisions one could make in 2017. 2020 is going to see cities blocking city center access to combustion engine cars (Paris for example). And you don’t want to be A-hole that got a new expensive artefact of automotive industry.

Now is the time to be patient if you weigh all the pros and cons. My Rover will need to hold off its retirement. If you are an early adopter, well, then you already drive a Leaf don’t you?

†I know that it is Faraday Future, but honestly, the car will be released so far in the Future that Future Faraday seems appropriate.

Apple at the present is just a company of incremental improvements of existing products and market expansion.

There are no new products to come. No new directions to travel. The problem with apple started when the company stopped making tools for creative people and focused on creating gadgets. But it is not all about the products made by apple. In the end, it is all about the core vision and ambition of Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook.

“Peacetime CEO aims to expand the market. Wartime CEO aims to win the market.”

Excerpt From: Horowitz, Ben. “The Hard Thing About Hard Things: Building a Business When There Are No Easy Answers.” – Chap. 7 – “Peacetime CEO/Wartime CEO”.

Tim Cook is an excellent peacetime CEO, like the ones of Eric Schmidt at Google or Steve Balmer at Microsoft. They were excellent at expanding the company market, but not really at reinventing the company. Wartime CEOs like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates or Larry Page, envision new products that will define new markets and want to control those markets. The uninteresting – to avoid the word dull – products of Apple, show that they really need a CEO that can stir the waters. For all this Tim Cook must resign.

Who can replace Tim Cook?

Probably no one inside apple right now. Mainly because the CEO cannot be someone of the existing CEOs. Most of them are just peacetime CEOs like Tim Cook. They are there since the time of Steve Jobs. And going back to Ben Horowitz book:

“I call managers who are happier setting the direction of the company Ones and those who more enjoy making the company perform at the highest level Twos.”

Excerpt From: Horowitz, Ben. “The Hard Thing About Hard Things: Building a Business When There Are No Easy Answers.” – Chap. 7 – “Ones and Twos”.

Steve Jobs was a natural One. As a founding CEO he was always defining the future. Gathering information and playing “eight-dimensional chess against their best competitors”. Ones need to be surrounded by Twos, people that excel at making the company execute the plan at full performance. Tim Cook was that kind of person. As were the others executives at apple at the time, either Jony Ive or Phil Schiller. As Twos they complemented Steve Jobs being the One.

When Jobs passed way Tim Cook took over and we started having a Two as the CEO. He made Apple stronger and bigger than ever before. Apple expanded with the same products. But now, that existing products are not sustaining that expansion, Apple needs to redefine their strategy. Define the big transformative objectives. Decide on where to go next. For that, Apple needs a One at the helm, and that’s why Tim Cook must resign.

When you accidentally find a paper with Cosma Shalizi as one of the co-authors you know you have to read it. And this one is an interesting paper because of some research aspects that are of my interest. The abstract’s first sentence immediately caught my eye.

In this paper we present a statistical method for inferring historical social networks from biographical documents as well as the scholarly aims for doing so.

I found Six Degrees of Francis Bacon: A Statistical Method for Reconstructing Large Historical Social Networks interesting because it connects with my own work in some aspects:

Historical Analysis

  • They focus on the analysis of historical documents. The authors use automated text extraction elements for inferring networks of personal relations from historical data. It relates to my work on the detecting Lisbon’s historical patterns and the unbuilt Lisbon.

Natural Language Processing

  • They use many NLP and topic modelling techniques that are state of the art practice.

Networks

  •  A Poisson Graphical Lasso statistical method to infer the network from the co-occurrence matrices is used. More elaborate than the simple co-occurrence matrix I used in the survey of architecture floor design network construction. This approach is probably going to be of use for the future revision of the survey work.

Code availability

Use of experts: Peer assessment

  • Curious use of experts to tune the quality of the method. Important to compare with work done on the clustering of floor plan designs. Using experts to create ground truths is common, but they come with their own pitfalls.

The weirdest thing about Apple’s Touch Bar is that it might be really goodhttp://feedproxy.google.com/~r/triploexpresso/~3/3l__pt3jGtE/weirdest-thing-apples-touch-bar-might-really-good.htmlapplemacTechnologykeynotemacbook promacOSTim CookTouch Bargeral@triploexpresso.com (TriploExpresso.com)Thu, 27 Oct 2016 14:33:03 PDThttp://www.sixhat.net/?p=4910Finally, after so many nights, Apple showed something that might be important for the future of laptops. The Touch Bar. I haven’t written about Apple in a long time. The reason being that the past iterations of the Mac were, well, bland.  But now, I think that this hybrid approach to input in the laptop can work well and hope to see this developed into more products other than just a strip of OLED display above the numbers row.

  • Would a Touch Bar placed between the numbers row and the letters work better for practical purposes?
  • With such a large trackpad, would it be possible to have the Touch Bar technology in the trackpad and make it a secondary screen? akin to a Nintendo 3DS?
  • There is a lot of real estate on the surface of the keyboard. Between palm rests, trackpad and Touch Bar would be possible to make the entire surface a screen? BUT, please never remove the physical keyboard for text input. Well, Apple could make the individual keys mini-screens with variable input according to apps.
  • Imagine swapping the position of the keyboard with the trackpad. The keyboard would be on the edge and the trackpad near the screen. Next imagine a trackpad whose width was equal to that of the keyboard. But even better. The trackpad also was a touch screen. That would really be an amazing touch bar.

Touch Bar: the beginning of a new trend?

These are ideas that would make the MacBook Pro very expensive, but as the technology matures, prices would go down. What I like in the Touch Bar is that the door is now open to an array of possibilities that until now didn’t exist. I don’t think that this implementation of this Touch Bar is that brilliant, but it is all about the potential for the future of laptops. Let’s just hope that the Touch Bar feature becomes useful and not something like Sony’s PS Vita back touchpad.

Research has been trying to find alternatives input method for ages. Voice controlled, stenographic inputs, eye movement controlled input, etc… All very interesting on their own, but nothing until now could supplant a traditional keyboard. Maybe the combination of touchscreen and traditional keys is the way forward.

Here’s a list of things that stopped working and that I’m really upset about:

  • I use a different keyboard layout called ColemaP. A slightly optimised version of Colemak. This keyboard layout relies on the Caps Lock key being the BACKSPACE key. Thus, I used a small software called Seil. With Mac OS Sierra it STOPPED WORKING.
  • Outlines, outlines, outlines, some people can run a NASA space program with outlines. I used OmniOutliner for the past 10 years uninterruptedly. It is a great piece of software that simply made outlining easy. Now, with the upgrade to Sierra, it STOPPED WORKING and crashes every time I launch the program.
  • I use GPGTools for singing my emails and encrypting messages — You are encrypting your emails, aren’t you?. It worked great and integrated well with Mail. Guess what? It STOPPED WORKING. Sure, I can still encrypt/decrypt text manually, but the integration with Mail was so nice.
  • Occasional App crashing. It seems that now and then some app refuses to open and crashes with a message. The previous bullet points are systemic errors.  The apps STOPPED WORKING completely. Furthermore, there have been other random cases of computer fury and sadness. Well, let’s see if incremental releases make this Sierra something tamer.

In conclusion, I’m stuck using Sierra, I’m not downgrading right now, even if the Sierra problems persist. But I’m not a happy camper.

MEA CULPA, MEA CULPA. Que bela lente.

Is the Canon EOS M5 a danger to Nikon?http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/triploexpresso/~3/n6s0UgWT6Ko/canon-eos-m5-danger-nikon.htmlPhotographycanoncanon m5nikongeral@triploexpresso.com (TriploExpresso.com)Thu, 15 Sep 2016 03:48:38 PDThttp://www.sixhat.net/?p=4905And here we have the Canon EOS M5

canon-eos-m5

It took Canon 4 iterations of the M camera to make finally something that on paper looks a great camera. Four, because There is no Canon EOS M4 as number 4 brings bad luck in Japan — It sounds like the word for death. Had Canon failed (again) and I wouldn’t be worrying about Nikon. The problem is if Canon succeeds with this camera. Then, I don’t know what Nikon will do with their 1 series. Nikon small 1-inch sensor cameras fall just in no man’s land, between compacts and proper APS/full frame sensors.

There are two or three things that I like about this Canon EOS M5. The dual focusing pixels, that allow fast focus, are one. They bring the best of the two worlds with phase detect and contrast based focusing. I also think that Canon EOS M5 sensor will please many Canon fans. Canon produces their own sensors and with Sony, they dominate the digital camera world. This means users will get the same characteristics as in their main bodies. And finally, the in video 5-axis stabilization will allow this camera to be a travel photographers dream.

Nikon APS mirrorless cameras?

Nikon needs to convert the entry level DSLR D3xxx series (with a D3400 just announced pre-Photokina) into a mirrorless camera. Make it in a way that it uses the same sensor and same technology of the lineup, but remove the mirror. Start by trimming the body to a mirrorless shape, create a couple of good lenses for the system, and give an adapter for the existing lenses. That would be a great way for Nikon to (re)enter the mirrorless camera market.

In a time when the Canon EOS M5 might start annoying some executives at Nikon headquarters, they need to reshuffle. Canon has the EOS M5, time for Nikon to play ball.

Graphene Batteries. Maybe the future?http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/triploexpresso/~3/YU3Ottky9OI/graphene-batteries-maybe-the-future.htmlbatterieselectric carsenergygaphenegeral@triploexpresso.com (TriploExpresso.com)Thu, 07 Jul 2016 14:30:57 PDThttp://www.sixhat.net/?p=4896

I’ve been a bit sceptic about electric cars getting massive adoption in the next few years because of the battery technology. I believe that you’ll need at least a 10 fold increase in capacity per litter and cost before you’ll see massive adoption of the electric car. And politicians forcing electric cars on us won’t work either.

If you look at the electric car, the limiting factor — or the critical factor if you prefer — is the power source. How to store and charge the batteries. Until now, if you really wanted to be a good boy scout, as an early adopter you would be waiting at least 30 minutes for a 80% charge. This is not going to cut it in a world where fueling takes 2 minutes at the petrol station.

Now, researchers at UCLA announced that they developed a new kind of battery. It is made of Graphene. And it charges much faster than anything previously invented. The technology would allow a MacBook Pro to charge in just 30 second. AMAZING.

Graphene batteries?

Graphene batteries are just around the corner. They are more powerful, charge faster, and hopefully are stable enough to enter mass production. Graphene is the wonder material of the XXI century. Graphene is a honeycomb lattice structure of carbon atoms bond together. It is like a sheet of carbon atoms. When graphene is then added to the electrodes of batteries it improves their functioning, because of its structural properties, density and electrical conductivity.

Now they’ve made this announcement and are basically looking for funding. I haven’t read the publications they produced, and this might end up being an hoax. Or, due to some technical impossibility impossible to market. They naturally sell it beautifully and being all marvels in the elevator pitch but globally there are many hurdles before such a wonderful super-capacitor could be in the market.

O Nani… pois. A impulsão do Cristiano é simplesmente brutal.

Facebook in Paris without a tablethttp://feedproxy.google.com/~r/triploexpresso/~3/CY-jRw41DVE/facebook-in-paris-without-a-tablet.htmldia a diageral@triploexpresso.com (TriploExpresso.com)Wed, 06 Jul 2016 09:40:02 PDThttp://www.sixhat.net/?p=4894Facebook to translate posts into different languages AUTOMATICALLY

Well, AUTOMATICALLY is the interesting aspect of all this. Not because the capability is there, but because it has some ethical aspects to it. Why should something be able to do that? What if I post a Portuguese poem? How is FB going to translate Shakespeare?

Naturally 99% of what is posted on FB is irrelevant and could be translated for ease of comprehension. But in any case the way a translation is made can have a great impact on the perceived message. Great translators can capture the aesthetic of the original and sometimes paraphrase to capture the play of words.

Facebook can’t do any of these subjective things. FB is not going to achieve anything else other than sterile translations. And for the cases where you could express something other than words … well don’t share on social media. Read, enjoy, write.

Paris oldies

Paris decided to ban old cars. Not the classics, just the old, polluting cars. Anything pre 1997 can’t circulate from 8am to 8pm. Well, me owning a 1998 car, makes me wonder if I should start thinking about replacing mine. Anyway Lisbon is starting to become a bit claustrophobic for cars anyway.

Are tablets dead?

I’ve been looking at my iPad sitting in the shelf for so much time that I started to wonder if tablets are becoming a type of XXI century CD. Very hyped in the beginning but suddenly no one want’s to use them anymore?

I went to see my website statistics and smartphone visits beat tablets 6:1, so is there a reason for this or is it just an outlier? Maybe with all the big screen smartphones no one wants to lug around a tablet anymore.

Bem seguro a defender, inócuo a atacar.

What does football, Brexit and my kitchen have in common?http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/triploexpresso/~3/FcG7Jw9hV70/football-brexit-kitchen-common.htmlTechnologyAmerica CupArgentinaBoston DynamicsBrexitChilegeral@triploexpresso.com (TriploExpresso.com)Mon, 27 Jun 2016 07:57:15 PDThttp://www.sixhat.net/?p=4886After loosing to Chile (second time in a row), the second best player in the world doesn’t want to play anymore for his country at the age of 29 (after four lost finals). Maybe there was some problem with the money suitcase travelling to the Cayman islands, but in any case Argentina loses big time and probably only Adidas and Barcelona can call themselves winners in this strange decision.

Back to Brexit, when you have Sarah Palin, Putin, Trump, and Iran, all congratulating the Leave you know you have a problem in your hands. Britain has made one of those mistakes that will take 50 years to overturn, unless politicians ACT NOW.

And still in the UK, finally, scientists are waking from their lethargic lab experiments to the realisation that there won’t be much funding after Brexit after all. And if there is a class of workers that can smell the lack of funding a mile way… that’s us scientists. SHOW ME THE CHEESE.

Robots

I love them, thing that they’ll be great in the future, but I don’t understand this quest to make robots resemble mammals — humans, dogs, unicorns… The latest from Boston Dynamics is the epitome of absurdity. A robot-dog doing the dishes… And while they have some sense of humor showing the hurdles that robotics still has to overcome at the end of the video, these four legged versions are reaching the end of interestingness (maybe that’s why Google wants to sell the company).

The interesting part of robotics is not the development of Hardware, but software, mainly “brains”. And brains are algorithms, are neural networks, are simulations, new computation forms, inverse kinematics, and so on. Probably this platform has already reached its limit and is time to move on. For me a robot is something on this software side of the viewpoint. Tesla’s autopilot makes the car a kind of robot, and a very capable one. It doesn’t need to look like a whale to do drive.

and the answer to the question is NOTHING

JASP or not to JASP? Bayesian statistical methods for free.http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/triploexpresso/~3/8tqGAkSkhkM/jasp-not-jasp-bayesian-statistical-methods-free.htmlprogrammingrcranSciencebayesjaspmondrianrstudiostatisticsgeral@triploexpresso.com (TriploExpresso.com)Sat, 25 Jun 2016 03:01:27 PDThttp://www.sixhat.net/?p=4883There are two ways of doing statistical analysis. One that I call the Excel approach and the other that I call the Experts approach.

You use the former if you are a mouse user, and like to point and click at things without understanding what is happening. You can also forego control too.

And you use the latter for finer control over outputs. They require some understanding of the theoretical aspects of the analysis, and a lot more punching of the keyboard.

Introducing JASP

I’ve been experimenting a statistics software called JASP that aims to be a small statistics software — ‘an alternative to SPSS’. It falls in the realm of Excel users but has the power of Experts underneath. What? Is THAT POSSIBLE?

JASP has only a few, well… FOUR, categories of analysis — t-tests, anova, regression, and frequencies — and this is fine for most of the use cases. I find it particularly interesting for EDA (Exploratory Data Analysis) where you just want to look at the data your working with.

Everything is visual and done with the mouse, from loading data, to clicking through the options of the analysis you want to perform.

The output is beautiful but limited to HTML with the images embedded as png data:uris. It would be great to export the results for use in academic papers — eps or pdfs would be great for LaTeX. This makes JASP a little limiting.

What about Mondrian?

In any case, JASP is still in its infancy and will evolve rapidly. As for exploratory data analysis software there are alternatives. One of my favourites is Mondrian. Mondrian is old as it started in 1997, latest stable is from 2011 and latest beta is from 2013. Mondrian doesn’t have the beautiful graphics of JASP either. Sometimes simple things are the best and Mondrian just works.

But isn’t JASP just a gui for R?

The cool thing about JASP is that all the clicks and clanks are just a way to pass parameters to R functions. The backend is R and therefore you can do everything the hard way if you really need to improve on the existing functions. For example, sometimes you need to make your plot scales logarithmic. There is no way to do that in JASP but if you use the R function underlying it… you solve your problem — and you can export PDFs for paper production.

The R scripts that power JASP are available at Github. If you want to use them in your own advanced work in R just go ahead and read them.

The British Strike OUT. What a mistake they made!http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/triploexpresso/~3/0J2whMKyQog/british-strike-mistake-made.htmldia a diageral@triploexpresso.com (TriploExpresso.com)Thu, 23 Jun 2016 23:47:38 PDThttp://www.sixhat.net/?p=4881Well, the chances where there, the clowns were out, the stupidity made them blind, and now BRITAIN VOTED OUT. This might be the biggest face changing in Europe since WWII and we all will have privileged seats to watch/or be part of/ whatever you prefer.

The late Iain Banks, one of Britain best writers of the late XX/early XXI centuries, summed the discussion at hand.

Iain Banks quote

Today I’m seeing a lot of people anger now that the remain lost. They are all scratching their heads and thinking how was this possible. Edward Snowden put it best:

Letting a society go into a spiral of discussing stupid ideas results in stupid decisions. That is something that Serge Galam showed with his voting models in a theoretical viewpoint.

The British will have to pay for this adventure. They are already paying in some sense because the Sterling Pound immediately collapsed:

Sterling Pound Collapses after results

I’m a great defender of change. Change, like the great Portuguese poet Camões once said the world is change, which forever takes on new qualities, [Todo o mundo é composto do mudança,//Tomando sempre novas qualidades], drives the world. But not when it sends your country into a deadlock.

The EU failed Europeans because they didn’t change. They imposed power in a top-down manner and this is forcing EU nations to change in unpredictable and radical ways and like Britain letting countries go into a spiral of nationalism that reminds the ideas of the post WWI that lead to WWII.

Speaking of which, the Guardian has a science podcast about find new planets. Anyone that is in shock might start searching for a space ship out of the planet. Well at least out of the island, but I suspect that the ones running for their CVs are those in Brussels.

APFS might be the best new thing in macOS Sierrahttp://feedproxy.google.com/~r/triploexpresso/~3/n3n273K4p9Y/apfs-might-best-new-thing-macos.htmlapplegeral@triploexpresso.com (TriploExpresso.com)Tue, 21 Jun 2016 04:00:12 PDThttp://www.sixhat.net/?p=4877I’ve long forgotten to watch Apple keynotes because honestly … they don’t present much these days and my time is very valuable to be sitting for 90 minutes watching promotional material. BUT, in the latest presentation of the future operating system there was something that catched my attention: THE NEW FILE SYSTEM. Apple has been developing it for the past 3 years — making it very young and immature — but it is clearly an attempt to make something modern that goes beyond the HFS+ now on macs. It is good that Apple finally decided to move forward, it is a pity that — in good apple tradition — they did not chose to use open source, but in the end, Mac users will get something better at the next OS that is not just some Bling. REAL TECH. That has to be good, right?
